Valerie Slattery, age 79, of De Pere, surrounded by her family, found her eternal peace after a courageous 1.5 year battle with cancer, and an unexpected change in her health that led to her significant decline.
Val was born in Green Bay, WI on October 19th, 1946 to Howard and Florence Wolske.
Valerie and Jerry Ver Bruggen Sr. shared a special relationship over 10 years together, and were blessed with 3 beautiful children. On July 19th, 1991 she was united in marriage to her loving husband James Slattery. They enjoyed many years together, living in De Pere, on their regular vacations, and trips to Las Vegas. They often enjoyed going on supper club date nights, playing in their dart league together and watching sports and game shows.
For many years Val devoted her time and dedication to her work as a trusted household keeper. She honored the importance of her work, the relationships she formed and took great pride in her role.
Those who knew Val knew she loved thrifting and shopping. She enjoyed and had the gift of giving. A glass of dry red wine, and trips to Door County were never complete without a cherry pie. Cheering on the Green Bay Packers, having a passion for fashion and jewelry and spending time with her friends and family were some of her favorites also. Ultimately, what prevailed all, was her faith. Her faith was a compass, steady and unshaken.
She lived a life that shimmered with love, generosity, and strength. Her presence lit up every room, not through grandeur alone, but through kindness freely given and a heart always open to others. She carried herself with grace, found beauty in everyday moments and left behind a legacy of warmth, laughter and unwavering devotion to those she loved.
Val is survived by her children: Jerry Ver Bruggen JR and Kathy (Bert) Gagnon, Grandchildren: Andrea (Scott) Guns, Sara Ver Bruggen, Jonathon Ver Bruggen, Danielle (Nick) Rouse-Haas, 12 Great Grandchildren, step children, sister Audrey Baumgart, niece and nephews and forever family friend, Julie Worthington.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, son Jimmy Ver Bruggen, brother Dale Wolske, brother-in-law Mike Baumgart, and Jerry Ver Bruggen SR.
A memorial service will be held on February 20, 2026 at 4:00 pm. With time for friends and family to gather from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, before lifelong friend Father Willie will officiate our service.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Unity Hospice for their kind and compassionate care of Mom.
