Steve (Al) Hyson Cornelius

Steve (Al) Hyson Cornelius, 54, of Green Bay, died Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Green Bay Health Services, under the compassionate care of Unity Hospice.

Steve was born December 6, 1971, in Milwaukee, the son of Hyson Cornelius Jr. and the late Betty Mae Cornelius. He grew up in Milwaukee and attended James Madison High School.

Steve lived life on his own terms. He often said he was his own person - that he just wanted to live and have fun - and he meant every word of it. He was never one to be bound by anyone else’s rules, and the people who loved him came to understand that as one of the truest things about him. He also was very proud of his heritage and to be an enrolled tribal member of the Oneida Nation.

In 2022, Steve opened Steve’s Creations and poured his artistic energy into screen printing and custom craftsmanship. Shirts, tumblers, coffee mugs, socks, pants - if it could take a print, Steve could bring it to life. It was never really about the business. Making something by hand for somebody else was how Steve showed up for people, and there was almost always a project waiting on his table. That same instinct showed in how he cared for his father. Steve stepped in as Hyson’s caregiver and stayed there, offering steady comfort, patience, and support when it was needed most.

Steve was father to Heather and Steven, and grandfather to Sommer, Chance, and Hunter. For the past nine years, Steve shared his home and his days with Chance, and the two were inseparable. Football was their shared language - Steve taught him the game from the ground up and handed down his own love for it. A die-hard Green Bay Packers fan his whole life, Steve was never prouder than when he was on the sideline watching his grandson play.

Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Mae Cornelius, and his brother, Michael Danielson. Those who loved him find comfort in imagining the three of them together again.

He is survived by his father, Hyson Cornelius Jr.; his daughter, Heather Berther, and her partner, Nick Wolfe, of Appleton; his son, Steven Cornelius, of Waukesha; his grandchildren, Sommer White, Chance Berther, and Hunter Wolfe; his sisters, Angela (Corey) Mielke of Seymour, Rebecca Danielson and her partner, Michael Roberson, of Milwaukee, and Karrie (Tom) Danielson-Houlton of Ormond Beach, Florida; his sister-in-law, Jackie Danielson of Tucson, Arizona, widow of his brother Michael; his childhood friend David Rosenow, who was a brother to him in every way that counted; his special cousin, Paul Petier; his nieces and nephews, Keith, Michelle, Jeremy, Justin, Michael, Chris "CC", Ashley, Katie, and Jordin; great-nieces and great-nephews: Autumn, Blade , Elijah and Charlotte; and cousins far and near.

The family extends its deepest gratitude to the staff of Unity Hospice and Green Bay Health Services for the kindness, dignity, and comfort they gave Steve and his family in his final days. Steve’s generous heart, his creative hands, and the love he poured into Chance will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will begin at 10:15 AM with the funeral ceremony following at 12 PM Noon on Sunday, September 20, 2026 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 340 S. Monroe Ave., Green Bay, Wisconsin, 54301. There will be a time to share memories during the service to give friends and family a chance to share a brief memory of Steve. Oneida Drummers will be closing out the funeral ceremony with lunch to follow. Interment will be held at Oneida Sacred Burial Grounds, 101-499 W Adam Dr, Oneida, Wisconsin, at 3:00 PM the same day.
