Raymond De Villo Gantenbein

Raymond Gantenbein, a beloved father, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2026, at the age of 93, in the comforting surroundings of his assisted living facility. His passing comes after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. 

Born on May 12, 1933, in New Albin, Iowa, Ray was the cherished son of Raymond and Mary (Holmes) Gantenbein. He was predeceased by his parents, his daughter Mary Pat Gantenbein, his brother Justin Gantenbein, and brothers-in-law Richard Weiland and Harvey Friedson. 

Ray led a life full of accomplishments and integrity. After graduating from Aquinas High School in La Crosse, Wisconsin, in 1951, he pursued higher education with vigor, earning a Bachelor of Arts in political science and history from the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota in 1955. He furthered his studies at the University of Michigan and the University of Bridgeport, eventually receiving a Master of Education from the University of St. Thomas in 1961. 

His sense of duty and dedication extended beyond academics. Ray served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1957 as part of the Naval Beach Group II, attaining the rank of Yeoman, 3rd Class. 

Following his military service, Ray embarked on a distinguished teaching career that spanned over three decades. From 1959 to 1992, he inspired young minds in the Detroit area and Green Bay school systems, notably spending 21 years at Washington Junior High School and six years at Green Bay East High School. He was a beloved teacher, known for his unmistakable laugh that former students would recognize in public places for years afterwards, earning the first Outstanding Teacher of the Year award in 1976. His leadership was evident as he served as the social studies department chairman for 20 years. 

Beyond the classroom, Ray was deeply involved in his community. He served as School Board President and Parish Council President at St. John's the Evangelist, contributed to the GBEA Executive Committee, and volunteered his time to educate others on living wills and health care power of attorney. His love for music led him to join the Original Green Bay Boy's Choir, sharing his passion for church music across Northeast Wisconsin.

Ray's life was enriched by his love of travel, golf, and the Green Bay Packers. He cherished trips to Europe, especially Italy and Spain, and fondly remembered traveling with NFL legend Reggie White. The Gantenbein family has held season tickets to Packer games since 1957, a tradition that Ray deeply valued. 

He is survived by his children: Ray (Lisa) Gantenbein Jr., Martin Gantenbein, Jane Gantenbein, Ann (Chris) Heintz, and Sally (Gary) Jarmuskiewicz. His legacy continues through his grandchildren John Heintz, Tyler and Jacob Jarmuskiewicz, Barbara Ann Gantenbein (and great-grandson Conner), Jessie (Brenda) Carpenter, and Sabrina Carpenter. He is also survived by his sisters Mary Jane Weiland and Rose Friedson, and his close friend Barbara Schimmel and her daughter Terri. 

Ray's family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Bellevue Senior Living, the Veteran's Home Based Primary Care, Right at Home, and Unity Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion. 

A funeral service to celebrate Ray's life will be held on September 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's the Evangelist, located at 427 St. John Street, Green Bay, WI 54301. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM until the time of Mass.

Raymond Gantenbein's life was a testament to the power of laughter, learning, and love. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who were fortunate to know him. His spirit lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and countless students whose lives he touched.
