Philip "Bill" Holmes completed his earthly journey on June 12, 2026, at the age of 78.

Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred; his father, Eino; his son, Matthew; and his beloved partner, Cindy. He is survived by his sister, Justine Holmes; his daughters, Tina (Dustin) Thalman and DeAnna Holmes; his grandchildren, Mikayla and Jaydin; and his great-grandchildren, Taliah and Gunnar.

Born on January 8, 1948, in Wakefield, Michigan, Bill carried throughout his life a deep connection to the land, the outdoors, and the rich Native history of the region he called home. He found peace in nature and lived by many of the principles reflected in the Seven Grandfather Teachings. These values guided the way he treated others and shaped the life he lived.

Bill proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. During his military service, he completed basic training and earned certifications as a heavy equipment mechanic, skills that would serve him well throughout his life.

A hardworking and resourceful man, Bill built a career that spanned numerous trades and industries. He worked in mining, operated and repaired heavy equipment, and drove both buses and semi-trucks. Over the years, he also served as head of maintenance for a local hotel, YMCA, and nursing home. In addition, he worked as an apartment caretaker, managed properties, assisted local businesses, and most recently helped care for a neighboring Airbnb owned by dear friends. Whether repairing machinery, maintaining buildings, or helping a neighbor solve a problem, Bill was happiest when working with his hands and putting his talents to good use.

Above all else, Bill valued family, friendship, and community. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, willingness to lend a helping hand, practical wisdom, and profound respect for both people and nature. Whether sharing stories, offering advice, fixing what was broken, or simply enjoying the outdoors, he left a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Bill's legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the lessons he shared, and the love he gave so freely. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of walking beside him on life's journey.

A celebration of Bill's life will be held at a later date.
