Karl J. Vertz

Karl J. Vertz, 82, went to Heaven peacefully with family by his side on Sunday, February 6, 2022. He was born to the late Reverend Kenneth and Helen (Schwake) Vertz July 1, 1939 in West Branch, MI.
Karl was baptized on July 23, 1939 and confirmed in Christian faith on March 29, 1953. He attended Michigan Lutheran Seminary for high school in Saginaw, MI, Northwestern College in Watertown, WI, and Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, WI. He married Carolyn Tews on August 25, 1963 and together they raised four children: Jon, Tod, Tricia, and Joy. He began his pastoral ministry in Allegan and Otsego, MI and served there for ten years. He then moved to Livonia, MI where he served at Peace Lutheran Church for over 30 years. He retired and moved to "The Shack" in Gladwin, MI. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and Michigan sports teams.
Karl is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolyn Vertz; his children: Tod (Beth) Vertz of Sturgeon Bay, WI, Tricia (Matt) Affholter of Canton, MI, and Joy (Matt) Huber of Columbus, WI; grandchildren: Laura (Shane) Christianson, Michael (Megan) Vertz, Sara (James) Jamieson, Logan Affholter, Derek Affholter, Carter Huber, and Megan Huber; two great grandchildren: Lydia Christianson and Emery Vertz; and his sister, Carol (Bob) Campbell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jon; and his sister, Lynette Rowell.
Visitation for Karl will be held on Friday, February 11, 2022 at Peace Lutheran Church in Livonia, MI (9415 Merriman Rd. Livonia, MI 48150) from 3 to 8 pm. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at 11 am with visitation 1 hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Peace Lutheran Church in Livonia, MI, Huron Valley Lutheran High School in Westland, MI, and Michigan Lutheran Seminary in Saginaw, MI.
Karl's family would like to thank the staff of Aurora Hospice for the care they provided.
