James W. Kamps Sr.

James W. Kamps Sr., aged 91, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on July 20, 2026. Born on December 3, 1934, in Green Bay, James spent his early years in service to his country as a member of the United States Army. Following his service, he dedicated his career to the Chicago Northwestern Railroad as a devoted engineer until retiring to care for his beloved parents alongside his first wife, Sherry. Jim was truly devoted to his family.

Jim's life was filled with adventure and passion. A talented stock car driver, he proudly raced under the number 1, securing many victories. His gifts extended beyond the racetrack, as he was known for his exceptional ability to fix anything—a skill lovingly shared with his daughter, Kathy. His love for hunting and fishing was a cherished pastime with his son, Jim Jr., earning him the affectionate nickname "one shot Jamesy."

Love graced Jim's life on two occasions. His first marriage to Sherry spanned 61 wonderful years. After her passing, he was fortunate to find companionship again with Nancy, with whom he shared two joyful years.

Friday lunches with Nancy and his siblings were treasured moments for Jim, as was his hobby of raising birds over the years.

James leaves behind his cherished wife, Nancy; children Kathy (Mitch) Bratz and Jim (Linda) Kamps Jr.; grandchildren Justin (Misty) Johns, Kindra Kozlovsky, Kareena (David) Yang, Haley (Sam) Wendland, Patrick Kamps, Rachel (Ryan) Tappa, Adam (Julia) Fritz, and Justin (Jennifer) Fritz; great-grandchildren Lucas, Noelle, Madison, Bryce, Brendan, Noah, Nora, Lucas F., Sadie, Sophie, Chelsea, and Parker. Nancy’s children Sandy (Jim) Dayton, Tammy (Dan) Griese, Mike Wichmann, Rick Wichmann, and John VanCamp; and siblings Donald, David, Robert, Linda, Beatrice, and Sharon also survive him. He is reunited in peace with his parents, first wife Sherry, great-grandson Michael, and siblings Joyce, Elayne, Roger, and Henry Jr.

Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals, Receptions, 340 S. Monroe Ave from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm, with a Memorial Service at 4:00 pm with Rev. Lloyd Adams.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Unity Hospice for the compassionate care provided to Jim.
