Harriet Hammond, aged 85, of Green Bay, WI, loving grandmother, mother, sister, and friend, joined her husband Doug Hammond on October 12, 2026.
Born at a time when women were told to get married and have children, Harriet took the time to go to college, even earning a masters degree. After college, she even toured Europe. Upon her return, she put her education to work within the Milwaukee Public School System as a Home Economics teacher, making a shift later in her career to teach students with learning disabilities. In the 1960s, Harriet moved with a friend to California and continued her teaching and education, even attending summer school in Hawai’i.
Today, we are all grateful for Harriet’s adventurous nature, as it was there she met Doug Hammond. They married on Dec 31, 1969, and returned with their children to Wisconsin in the 1980s. Without that encounter, she wouldn’t have the legacy that follows her - she was the beloved mother of Michelle and David, as well as her daughter-in-law Debra, and a loving grandmother to Hannah, Hunter (wife Maddie, son Emmett), and Alex (wife Hailey, children Kaizen and Olivia). She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law Audrey and Roger Raasch.
Harriet cherished time spent with family and friends, whether it was celebrating her Polish heritage with her sisters, waiting for the boil over after a day of adventuring around Door County, attending the Highland Fling at the Minnesota Renaissance Faire, or cheering on her beloved Packers and Brewers (though, as someone who simply loved sports, she was apt to watch any game at any time). In fact, in 1967, Harriet was at the “Ice Bowl” at Lambeau - the beer may have frozen, but the temperature did nothing to dampen her love of the team. (She also happened to be at the second “Ice Bowl” in 2015.)
Harriet had a love music - as a young woman, she and her friends would pile into a car and drive from Pound down to Green Bay to see their favorite musicians at the Riverside Ballroom. In fact, at just seventeen, Harriet attended what would become Buddy Holly’s final concert. Decades later, she traveled with her son to Clear Lake, Iowa, to see the site of the plane crash that took Holly’s life. Harriet continued to seek out live music, anything from a Christmas Extravaganza at the Cup of Joy to Reba McEntire at the Resch, though she rather enjoyed seeing Home Free when they would return to the city on their tours.
In recent years, she still enjoyed taking trips, traveling with her daughter to explore Mackinac Island and to reclaim her childhood spirit at Disney World (though for anyone who knew her knows that spirit never really left). She also loved a quiet night at home, which she shared with her daughter and pups, and visits from her family, including snuggles with her great-grandchildren and listening to her granddaughter sing.
Harriet was always quick with a smile and a story, and sometimes erred on the side of being just a little bit sassy. She was an absolute joy to those who got to share this life with her.
Harriet was preceded in death by her husband Doug (after forty-two years of marriage), her sisters Arlene Rosner and Diane Pucel, and her parents Evelyn Badora and David McClure.
Our loved ones live on in our memories, and so we know Harriet will live on with laughter, joy, and an abundance of love.
Michelle and David send a special thanks to the people of Unity Hospice and Caretta Senior Living for the kindness and care they showed to Harriet during her final months and transition.
A funeral for Harriet will be held in Green Bay at Newcomer Funeral Home, 340 S Monroe in Green Bay. Visitation will be from two to four p.m. on October 22 with a service to follow immediately after. At a later date, she will be buried next to her husband in a private burial at First Baptist Cemetery in Pound, WI.
