Elder met his wife, Sheri Riegert in 2004. They welcomed their first daughter, Haley in 2005 and were married in 2006. The couple was blessed with 2 more children, Gavin and Isabella.

Elder was a good teacher and was sure to always start his day in prayer. His faith in God was very important to him. He had a great sense of humor and loved to joke. José took great pride in his appearance and he was known for always smelling so good. He made sure his car was always clean and looking good, as well. He was a talented sportsman and also enjoyed working out in his yard. Elder was an extremely generous man and always put others before himself. He was always available to talk and share his wisdom and advice. He also was known to have a healthy appetite and loved to eat. He was a hard worker and an amazing provider for his family.
